# Data licensing pros and cons for company data

> Data licensing pros and cons: revenue and AI fluency on one side, privacy, rights, liability and thin price evidence on the other. Dated sources, self-reported.

## The short answer

Upside: revenue from stored records. micro1's Enterprise Data Partnership listing says $100K-$2M+ for approved data packages, its own claim. Downside: rights, privacy law, confidentiality and partner security are your risks. Payment evidence is thin and self-reported. Have counsel read the contract.

Every claim below comes from a dated source. When that source is a company selling the service, I say so, because it changes how much weight the claim gets.

## What are the upsides?

**Revenue from stored records.** Three companies put numbers on it, and all three are talking about themselves.

[micro1](/buyers/micro1)'s [Enterprise Data Partnership listing](https://www.micro1.ai/company-referral) says "$100K-$2M+ for approved data packages," and its data partnerships page lists tiers of $100K+, $500K+ and $1M+. [Handshake AI](/buyers/handshake-ai) says [$100K to $4M+](https://joinhandshake.com/ai/data-partnerships/).

[SimpleClosure](/buyers/simpleclosure) reported [nearly 100 deals at $10,000 to $100,000 per company](https://gizmodo.com/failed-companies-are-selling-old-slack-chats-and-email-archives-to-train-ai-2000747916). Read those as what the companies say, not as a rate card.

**Repeat income.** [Troveo says](https://www.troveo.ai/resources/exclusive-vs-non-exclusive-data-license) it pays you each time it licenses your data, not only the first time. A license can go to more than one buyer if the contract allows it. Exclusivity can pay more, and [Troveo](/buyers/troveo) says it's time-limited and has to be earned.

**AI fluency.** micro1's workflows track has employees use an AI agent on real tasks and grade it. micro1 says that makes teams more AI native. That's micro1's claim about its own program.

**Ownership can stay with you.** [micro1's pages](https://www.micro1.ai/data-partnerships) say companies retain ownership of their underlying data, and Troveo says you grant a defined right and keep ownership. [SimpleClosure's terms](https://simpleclosure.com/tos/) say title vests in the acquirer. Same word, different deals.

## What are the downsides?

**Rights.** Your email and chat hold other companies' confidential information under NDAs. Counsel flags trade secrets, waived privilege and employee talk protected under the National Labor Relations Act ([Frankfurt Kurnit](https://technologylaw.fkks.com/post/102o455/selling-company-data-for-ai-training-what-to-know-before-you-say-yes)).

**Privacy law.** California's CCPA [covers employee data](https://oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa), and a transfer for money can count as a sale. See [is licensing data to an AI lab a sale under CCPA](/answers/is-selling-data-to-an-ai-lab-a-sale-under-ccpa).

**De-identification limits.** Swapping names for stand-ins keeps the links across records. The [UK ICO position](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/data-sharing/anonymisation/pseudonymisation/) is that pseudonymised data is still personal data. The [Spirit flight attendants' union objected](https://time.com/article/2026/08/25/google-spirit-airlines-ai-data-RL/) on exactly that point.

**Buyer-side security.** Somebody on a buyer's or marketplace's team handles your data at some stage.

Mercor [confirmed a March 2026 supply-chain incident](https://www.mercor.com/blog/update-on-mercor-security-incident/), and reports say contractor data was involved. Our page on [who is liable if the buyer is hacked](/answers/who-is-liable-if-the-data-buyer-is-hacked) covers the contract question.

**Precedent.** The [FTC announced an action on 30 Mar 2026](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2026/03/ftc-takes-action-against-match-okcupid-deceiving-users-sharing-personal-data-third-party) against Match Group and OkCupid over sharing user photos with a third party. Deleting files doesn't reverse training, and [can I delete my data after an AI company trains on it](/answers/can-i-delete-my-data-after-an-ai-company-trains-on-it) explains why.

**Thin price evidence.** No public per-record price list exists. Epoch AI's January 2026 review of RL environments describes app replicas and lab partnerships with product companies, and does not discuss real company archives.

## How do you weigh them?

Rights first, price second. Rights decide what's on the table at all.

Run the [rights check](/rights-check), read the [risk map](/risks) and compare routes in [where to license company data](/answers/where-to-sell-company-data). Then talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign.

Figure: comparison of Two sides of licensing company data: Upside (Revenue, AI fluency), Risk (emphasized: Rights set the ceiling, Rights, privacy, security). Risk gets the emphasis because rights set the ceiling. A record you can't license stays out of the deal.
