## The short answer

It depends on the contract. Troveo says ownership never transfers. SimpleClosure's terms vest all right and title in the acquirer. micro1's page says companies keep ownership, but its CFO called the corpus track a one-time sale in an undated talk. California's CCPA can reach a license too.

A license grants permission to use data. A sale transfers title. Buyers blur the line. If you sign a deal, know which one you hold.

## What does Troveo say?

[Troveo's business page](https://www.troveo.ai/business-data) says you own the data. It says [Troveo](/buyers/troveo) licenses the data for you under terms you sign off on, and that ownership never transfers. Its licensing guide says the owner keeps the data and grants a defined right to use it. The guide names term and exclusivity among the terms to negotiate.

## What does SimpleClosure say?

[SimpleClosure's terms](https://simpleclosure.com/tos/) give it a broad license to user data and content. The license is:

- Non-exclusive.
- Transferable.
- Sub-licensable.
- Perpetual.
- Irrevocable.

The terms also say that when digital assets are acquired, all right, title and interest in them vests in the acquiring entity. That entity may use or license them without further compensation to the owner.

That is a different structure from Troveo's, even though both involve a company's data.

## What does micro1 say?

[micro1's data partnerships page](https://www.micro1.ai/data-partnerships) says companies retain ownership of their underlying data. In an undated recorded forum talk, [micro1](/buyers/micro1)'s CFO called the corpus track a one-time sale for $100K to $2M per company.

That figure is self-reported with no stated date, and no outcome is promised. So the talk and the page use different words for the same program.

A micro1 referral partner gave a third label in a micro1 video (self-reported, about 12:29). She named "a one-off sale" as the biggest misconception. She said the company licenses its data and keeps full access, and the data "remains at the company". Later she repeated that you are licensing, not selling.

A company keeps access because an export is a copy. Deletion at the end of the deal stays a question for the contract. See [can I delete my data after an AI company trains on it](/answers/can-i-delete-my-data-after-an-ai-company-trains-on-it).

## Does the license or sale label change privacy law?

California defines a sale as selling, renting, releasing, disclosing, making available or transferring personal information to a third party for money or other valuable consideration. Section 1798.190 tells courts to disregard steps that remove consideration to avoid that definition. The [CCPA page](/answers/is-selling-data-to-an-ai-lab-a-sale-under-ccpa) goes through the text.

## Which terms should I compare in a draft?

Look for these terms:

- Who holds title after signing.
- What uses are permitted.
- Whether the buyer can sublicense.
- How long the term runs.
- Whether it is exclusive.
- What happens at the end.

Sublicensing is a term to negotiate. See [limits on sublicensing](/answers/can-i-restrict-who-my-data-is-sublicensed-to) and [exclusivity terms](/answers/what-is-an-exclusivity-term-in-a-data-license).

The [buyers page](/buyers) lists the terms buyers publish. Our [managed readiness service](/managed-readiness) lays your drafts side by side without negotiating for you.

SimpleClosure's terms move title to the company that takes the data. Troveo and micro1 say ownership stays with the company.
