## The short answer

License Discord data to AI? I found no buyer that names Discord. Discord's Terms say your content is yours and give Discord a broad license. The Terms say nothing about AI training. You have no clear license to members' messages, only to your own posts.

Discord holds a different kind of record from a company's own tools. The messages are written by members, and many of them are not employees.

## Do any of the companies name Discord?

I checked three company pages. [Troveo](https://www.troveo.ai/business-data) lists Slack, Teams, Google Chat and Zoom under chat and messaging. [Mercor](https://www.mercor.com/data/) lists Slack and MS Teams. micro1's page does not name Discord either.

That is a negative finding from public pages, and a buyer may still take a private community's archive if asked. My [Slack data page](/answers/sell-slack-data-to-ai) shows what buyers say about workplace chat they do name.

## What do Discord's Terms say about content?

[Discord's Terms](https://discord.com/terms) say your content is yours, and that you give Discord a license to it.

The license covers using, reproducing, distributing, creating derivative works of, displaying and performing the content, for providing, developing and improving Discord's services. It is worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable.

The Terms contain no sentence on AI training or machine learning, in my reading.

## Who holds rights in Discord members' messages?

Under Discord's Terms, each person keeps ownership of what they post. The license in the Terms runs to Discord. I found no clause giving a server owner a license to members' messages.

That is my reading of one document, and counsel decides what it means for a given server. The same question comes up for [shared Slack channels](/answers/can-i-sell-slack-connect-or-shared-channel-messages-to-ai) and for [a shutting-down company's Slack](/answers/can-a-shutting-down-company-sell-its-slack-to-ai).

## What did I not verify?

I could not open Discord's Developer Policy, which governs bots and API use, because the page blocked my fetch. I did not find a rule for how a server owner exports server history. Discord's data request page also blocked my fetch.

Talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign. The [rights check](/rights-check) lists the first questions.

Figure: comparison of What Discord's Terms say about content: Ownership (Stays with the user), Discord's license (Broad, to Discord), AI training (emphasized: Silent in the Terms, Not mentioned). Discord's Terms say nothing about AI training, though they give Discord a broad license to user content.
