# License Google Workspace data to AI: what to know first

> Looking to sell Google Workspace data to AI? It goes out under a license. A super admin exports it, and Google's API policy bars apps selling user data for AI.

## The short answer

List your Google Workspace services and sizes, then export through a super admin. Google's admin export covers Gmail, Drive, Chat and Calendar. Terms say you keep your IP rights. API policy bars apps from selling user data to train AI. Which text applies depends on your export route.

Google Workspace holds the documents, mail and spreadsheets that make up a work trail. That trail is what buyers describe wanting.

## What counts as Workspace data?

[Google's admin export tool](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/migrate/export-all-your-organizations-data) lists Gmail, Drive data including shared drives, Chat, Calendar, Contacts, Groups, Keep, Tasks, Voice and Vault retained data.

[micro1](/buyers/micro1)'s David Revland, who works on human data, gave this example of a useful trail in an undated recorded forum talk: a Slack message asking for a finance report, plus the finished report in Google Sheets (self-reported).

Read that way, Gmail, Drive and Sheets form one chain.

## How do you find the size?

micro1 said in the same talk that its form asks for a rough size per tool and that it supplies instructions for finding those sizes, for example in Drive.

Its [web page](https://www.micro1.ai/data-partnerships) gives 30 or more employees as a threshold and states no data-size threshold (self-reported). My page on the [data manifest form](/answers/what-is-a-data-manifest-form) shows the full intake order.

## How does the admin export work?

Only a super administrator account at least 30 days old can start it, and that account needs two-step verification. Google applies a 48-hour security wait before data becomes available. Export typically takes 72 hours and can take up to 14 days.

Google puts the files in a temporary Cloud Storage bucket and deletes them 60 days after the export begins. The tool skips accounts created in the 24 hours before the export and deleted data, unless a Vault policy retained it.

## What do Google's Workspace terms say about customer data?

Google's [Workspace terms](https://workspace.google.com/terms/premier_terms/) say the customer retains all intellectual property rights in Customer Data.

The [Workspace API developer policy](https://developers.google.com/workspace/workspace-api-user-data-developer-policy) bars transferring, selling or using user data to train a machine learning or AI model beyond that user's own personalized feature. It also bars selling user data to data brokers.

The policy is written for apps that use Google's APIs. My reading is that an app a buyer connects through OAuth falls inside it. A super admin's own export file sits under the customer terms. A lawyer should confirm that reading for your contract.

I did not find a sentence in the terms I read that bars a customer from handing over its own export.

[Rights come first](/rights-check), because Drive holds client files and shared documents that belong to other people. Talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign.

Figure: steps Super admin starts export -> 48-hour wait, export runs -> Data ready, deleted at 60 days. Google's admin export starts with a super admin and ends with deletion of the exported copy after 60 days.
