## The short answer

License manufacturing data to AI only after checking for defense work. Some defense contract files carry strict security rules. One clause also sets a 72 hour limit to report a cyber incident to DoD. Mercor lists manufacturing. No source gives a price. Ask a lawyer which files may go.

This page reports what the clause and the buyer pages say. It is research, not legal advice.

> **Some files from a defense contract count as covered defense information. The contract and its markings decide which ones.** Think of the attic. A few boxes carry a government label. Leave those sealed until a lawyer reads the contract.

## Which companies list manufacturing?

[Mercor's data page](https://www.mercor.com/data/) names manufacturing among eight sectors (self-reported). [micro1](https://www.micro1.ai/data-partnerships) lists "operations and logistics" among six areas. [Troveo's business-data page](https://www.troveo.ai/business-data) names SAP, NetSuite, ServiceNow and Dynamics among its tools. Our [industry page](/answers/does-industry-matter-for-selling-company-data) puts the lists side by side.

## What manufacturing records might buyers want?

[Mercor](/buyers/mercor)'s data page is the only one that names manufacturing data types: work orders, QA logs and spec sheets. The other pages talk about everyday work records, such as tickets, contracts, invoices, project boards and standard operating procedures. No page names bills of materials or sensor data.

No source publishes a price for manufacturing records, so any figure you read lacks a published basis. [Polyshares](/buyers/polyshares)' [case studies](https://polyshares.com/track-record) price operational records from other sectors, such as a general contractor's, covered on the [construction page](/answers/sell-construction-company-data-to-ai).

## What does the DFARS clause say?

[DFARS 252.204-7012](https://www.acquisition.gov/dfars/252.204-7012-safeguarding-covered-defense-information-and-cyber-incident-reporting%2E) is the defense-contract safeguarding clause. Three parts matter here:

- Covered defense information is controlled technical information that is not classified. It can also be other information in the CUI Registry. DoD marks and provides it. Or the contractor collects, develops, receives, sends, uses or stores it while doing the contract.
- Paragraph (b) requires adequate security on contractor systems. For systems not run for the government, that means NIST SP 800-171.
- Paragraph (c) requires the contractor to report a cyber incident to DoD at dibnet.dod.mil "within 72 hours of discovery."

The clause is about safeguarding.

_The label on the box decides. Read the label._

## What about export controls on manufacturing data?

Releasing technology to a foreign person in the United States can count as an export under [15 CFR 734.13(a)(2)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/15/734.13). Our [source code page](/answers/can-i-sell-source-code-to-ai) explains the text. The same question applies to engineering files, CAD and process documents. We didn't research export law further.

## What can a manufacturer gather first?

List which systems hold which records. List which contracts carry defense or customer-confidentiality terms. List which files are marked controlled. The [rights check](/rights-check) asks the contract and NDA questions and lists what to settle with counsel.

Figure: steps Covered data, NIST SP 800-171 -> Cyber incident discovered -> Report to DoD within 72 hours. DFARS 252.204-7012 requires a report to DoD within 72 hours of discovering a cyber incident.

Have a lawyer read any contract before you sign. They like that.
