# What is the Spirit Airlines data sale? > Spirit Airlines data sale: Google's $10M winning bid awaits court approval, with the hearing reported moved to 6 Nov 2026. The bids and objections. It still needs court approval. The hearing moved from 14 Oct to 6 Nov 2026. ## What happened, in order? Spirit Aviation Holdings filed for chapter 11 in the Southern District of New York on 29 Aug 2025 (No. 25-11897). Its business data went to auction in mid-August 2026. The [ombudsman's report](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1684.0.pdf) puts the close on 13 Aug 2026, while the debtors' notice ([Doc 1663](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1663.0.pdf)) and the flight attendants' objection ([Doc 1489](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1489.0.pdf)) date it 14 Aug 2026. Google was the successful bidder at $10 million. Mercor.io bid $7.5 million ([Time](https://time.com/article/2026/08/25/google-spirit-airlines-ai-data-RL/)) and was named the alternate bidder ([ombudsman's report](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1684.0.pdf)). On 3 Sep 2026 micro1 filed notice that it would submit a competing bid. [Fortune reported](https://fortune.com/2026/09/14/micro1-tries-to-beat-googles-bid-to-buy-bankrupt-spirit-airlines-data-for-12-5-million-highlighting-value-of-data-to-ai-companies/) the figure as $12.5 million. The hearing has moved several times since August. ## Why did AI labs want it? Real corporate records show how people do their jobs. One expert quoted by Time said the purchase matters if you believe agents will generalize across the economy. [Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/09/14/micro1-tries-to-beat-googles-bid-to-buy-bankrupt-spirit-airlines-data-for-12-5-million-highlighting-value-of-data-to-ai-companies/) describes the prize as trajectories, meaning a record of steps that shows how to choose actions, use tools and recover from mistakes. A flight attendants' union filed an objection about "referential integrity" ([Time](https://time.com/article/2026/08/25/google-spirit-airlines-ai-data-RL/)). The worry is that links kept between data sets could let someone rebuild who is who after names are removed. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed an amicus brief on 2 Oct 2026 challenging the sale of employee data. The ombudsman is a court appointee under 11 U.S.C. 332. Her [5 Oct 2026 supplement](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1684.0.pdf) says passenger databases came out of the sale and Tonic.ai will de-identify unstructured data such as email. It also says she did not investigate risk to employees or third parties. ## Is the sale final? No. Google won the auction, and its $10 million winning bid still needs the bankruptcy court's approval. I found no sale order as of 10 Oct 2026. The approval hearing was moved from 14 Oct to 6 Nov 2026, [Travel Weekly](https://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Airline-News/Court-delays-hearing-on-Google-purchase-of-Spirit-data) reported on 9 Oct 2026. The earlier date came from the debtors' notice of 28 Sep 2026 ([Doc 1663](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039/gov.uscourts.nysb.331039.1663.0.pdf)). Travel Weekly reports that the move followed an 8 Oct letter from 121 members of Congress. The debtors' 9 Oct adjournment notice was not yet on the public docket mirror when I checked, so the new date rests on that press report. In the 28 Sep notice the debtors said they were working to resolve objections. Check the docket before you quote any of this. ## What does it mean if you hold company data? It's one data point from a bankruptcy sale, and a working company licenses under different terms. It's also one of the few prices in this market with a docket number attached.
