## The short answer

A rights holder in AI licensing is the party with authority to license content or data to an AI company. Troveo describes a chain from creator to licensor to buyer. The hard part is who holds rights in each record: a mailbox mixes your writing with clients' material.

Every AI data company and marketplace picks its own word for the rights holder. The legal question underneath stays the same.

## What do the companies call the rights holder?

[Troveo's business page](https://www.troveo.ai/business-data) says "Paid to Licensors," and its glossary uses "rights holder" for the party who agrees to exclusivity. [Protege](https://withprotege.ai/) speaks of "data holders" and promises clear rights protections and provenance. [micro1](/buyers/micro1) calls accepted companies "Qualified Enterprise Data Partnerships" (all).

The words differ, and each one points at whoever can grant the license.

## Who counts as the rights holder for company data?

No single answer covers a whole archive. Our [who owns company emails](/answers/who-owns-company-emails) page splits it into three groups: what your company wrote, what you hold for customers and what partners or guests posted.

The Spirit Airlines sale shows the split in practice. A software vendor, Springshot, argued that part of the archive was data generated by its software under its contract. An engine maker, International Aero Engines, pointed to confidentiality agreements ([The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/springshot-objection-spirit-airlines-data-google)).

## Does a license move ownership?

The sources say no. [Troveo](/buyers/troveo) says it licenses your data on your behalf and ownership never transfers. micro1 says companies [retain ownership](https://www.micro1.ai/data-partnerships) of their underlying data.

Troveo's [deals guide](https://www.troveo.ai/resources/ai-data-licensing-deals) says the owner keeps the data and grants a defined right to use it. Both are self-reported.

## What does a buyer ask a rights holder to promise?

[Sidley](https://www.sidley.com/en/insights/newsupdates/2026/07/legal-implications-in-ai-development-and-deployment-training-data-and-grounding-data), a law firm, says a data provider should expect to give representations that it has sufficient rights to license the dataset, with indemnification for third-party claims. That promise is hard to give for a mailbox where the three groups mix.

Our [reps and warranties page](/answers/what-reps-and-warranties-does-an-ai-data-buyer-ask-for) lists what buyers ask.

## How do you find out which records you hold rights to?

Start with the documents that bind you: customer contracts, NDAs, employee agreements and tool terms. The [rights check](/rights-check) asks about customer contracts, NDAs and staff policies, and the [risk map](/risks) shows where disputes have landed.

We give no legal advice and never judge a specific contract. Talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign.

Figure: steps Creator -> Licensor -> Buyer. In Troveo's chain of rights the licensor sits between creator and buyer and needs the authority to grant what it grants.
