## The short answer

Data monetization is using data to produce measurable economic value. MIT's study sorts it three ways: improving work with data (51% of returns), wrapping products with data (31%), and selling information (18%). Licensing records to an AI lab sits in that third group. Public prices are scarce and self-reported.

## What are the three ways to monetize data?

**Improving.** You use data to run the business better, such as keeping the right products in stock. MIT's example is using purchase data to stock shelves.

**Wrapping.** You add data to a product so it does more, such as recommendations that help a customer find and buy something.

**Selling.** The third group is information that solves a problem for someone else. MIT's example is a healthcare company sharing spending patterns with hospitals. The authors note that selling is more than selling raw datasets ([MIT Sloan](https://mitsloan.mit.edu/press/data-everybodys-business-fundamentals-data-monetization)).

## Which way earns the most?

In the MIT research, improving did, at 51% of returns on average, with wrapping at 31% and selling at 18%. These are averages across studied firms and not a forecast for yours.

That makes the cheapest data monetization an internal project more often than not. A company with records buyers want can still add licensing on top.

## Where does licensing data to AI companies fit?

It is one route, with a short public record. micro1's [Enterprise Data Partnership listing](https://www.micro1.ai/company-referral) says $100K-$2M+ for approved data packages (self-reported). [Troveo](/buyers/troveo) says first sales run to six figures and pays a revenue share on repeat sales ([Troveo](https://www.troveo.ai/resources/data-monetization-examples), self-reported).

Our [guide to monetizing company data](/guides/monetize-company-data) ranks the routes by how much evidence supports them. The [pillar guide](/guides/how-to-sell-company-data-to-ai-companies) covers the licensing process.

## What should you check before licensing data?

Rights. A sale of personal information for money can count as a sale under [California law](https://cppa.ca.gov/regulations/pdf/cppa_act.pdf), and customer contracts can restrict secondary use. Run the [rights check](/rights-check) and read the [risk map](/risks).
