Can you license data to AI labs? What they want

The short answer

Yes, through vendors or marketplaces, since most labs don't publish direct intake. micro1's CFO says labs want workflows: the chain from request through tools to deliverable. micro1's data partnership page lists $100K+ to $1M+ tiers for companies with 30+ employees. Smaller teams have fewer public routes.

The visible routes into a lab run through another company, so that is where I start. Below: what labs ask for, who sits between, and what size of company fits which route.

What do AI labs want from company data?

Records of work, with the path visible. micro1's CFO said in an undated recorded forum talk that the prize is the chain from a message to a finished product.

In the same talk, micro1's David Revland gave an example: a Slack message asking for a finance report, then the report in a spreadsheet (self-reported).

Fortune calls the recorded steps a trajectory (Fortune).

Labs and their vendors use such records to build RL environments. These are simulated workplaces where an agent practices a job.

Epoch's interviews give these prices:

  • A website-clone environment costs near $20,000.
  • A Slack-grade clone costs near $300,000.
  • Tasks cost $200 to $2,000.
  • Exclusive deals cost roughly 4x to 5x non-exclusive ones.

Who sits between you and the lab?

Direct programs such as micro1, Handshake AI and Mercor. Marketplaces such as Troveo. RL environment vendors. Where to license company data compares the routes, and who bid on Spirit Airlines' data lists the named bidders.

What can a small company realistically do?

micro1's CFO described three routes in an undated recorded forum talk (self-reported):

  • Corpus deal. A data partnership covering your stored records, and micro1 says companies keep ownership of the underlying data.

The CFO named $100K to $2M per company in that undated talk. The current criteria on micro1's pages list 30+ employees, mature operations and primarily English documentation.

  • Workflows track. Employees use an AI agent on real daily work and grade it. micro1 receives the grades and the agent's trajectory. The company chooses how many employees take part.

  • Referral. An introduction of another company.

Idler says it licenses codebases and de-identified operating data from businesses with 10 to 100 employees. It publishes no price. Below those minimums, the public routes thin out fast.

What is the gap in the demand case?

Epoch's review of RL environments describes app replicas and lab partnerships with product companies, and does not discuss real company archives. Marketplace copy keeps buyers generic. No public record shows the price a working company with ten years of CRM history gets.
