Startup wind down service: SimpleClosure, Sunset

The short answer
A startup wind down service handles legal filings, payroll tax closures and stakeholder coordination. SimpleClosure runs these and added an Asset Hub on 16 Apr 2026 to sell source code and workspace data. Gizmodo reported nearly 100 deals at $10,000 to $100,000 per company.
Closing a company means filings, tax closures and a decision about who gets the assets. These services bundle that work.
What does a wind down service do?
SimpleClosure's site describes legal filings, payroll tax closures, stakeholder coordination and asset sales through its Asset Hub. It says the founders built it from their own closure experience.
Sunset is reported to offer dissolution consulting for venture-backed startups. That comes from TechCrunch coverage of its February 2024 seed round. I couldn't open its site, so treat that description as unconfirmed.
What happened to Carta's service?
TechCrunch reported that Carta revealed Carta Conclusions in February 2024. Carta decided to retire it by December 2024. Carta then joined SimpleClosure's $15 million Series A, which TTV Capital led.
Carta told TechCrunch it made more sense to invest and partner than to build in-house. It offered its customers a free consultation and a 10% discount on SimpleClosure.
Which service sells the data?
Only SimpleClosure's Asset Hub came up in my reading. It covers source code and workspace data. Workspace data was in beta at launch. Gizmodo reported nearly 100 deals at $10,000 to $100,000 per company.
I found no data-sale program for Sunset or Carta. Not finding one in my search doesn't prove none exists, so ask each service directly.
What should you compare?
- The fee for the wind down, and the fee or revenue share on a data license
- Whether the license it takes over your data is perpetual and irrevocable
- Which buyers see the data and who holds the name mapping
- What the terms say if a buyer is breached
