How to check GitHub organization size

The short answer
GitHub has no single organization-size view, so add up repositories. The REST API lists an organization's repositories with a size field for each. The docs do not state the unit. Test against a repository you can measure by cloning before you add figures. GitHub recommends repositories under 5 GB.
David Revland, who works on human data at micro1, said in an undated recorded forum talk that its form asks for a rough size per tool (self-reported), so a rough figure is the goal.
What does GitHub publish about size?
GitHub's page on large files says repositories should ideally be under 1 GB, and under 5 GB is strongly recommended. Git warns on files over 50 MiB, and GitHub blocks files over 100 MiB. Large files should move to Git LFS. The page points to the open-source git-sizer tool for analyzing repository structure.
How do you total an organization?
The REST reference has a "List organization repositories" endpoint, GET /orgs/{org}/repos, with per_page up to 100 and a page parameter. The response includes an integer size for each repository.
The reference gives no description or unit for size. Add the figures only after you check one against a repository you can measure by cloning it. We also did not confirm whether LFS data is counted.
Does micro1 ask for the organization size?
micro1's David Revland said in the same undated forum talk that its data manifest form asks which services a company uses and a rough size for each, and GitHub is on that list (self-reported, recording undated).
The micro1 pages I read do not name GitHub and set no figure for code. See micro1 GitHub data.
By bytes, code adds little to a 1 TB corpus. By content, history shows how people worked. Our GitHub licensing page covers who has bought code, and can I license source code to AI covers licenses, client-owned code and export controls.
What about GitLab?
GitLab shows storage in its own Usage quotas page. See licensing GitLab repos to AI.
