What is an RL environment?

The short answer

An RL environment is a simulated workplace where an AI agent practices a task and gets scored on the result. Website clones cost near $20,000, Slack-grade clones near $300,000. Epoch's review does not say whether real company data goes into them.

How does an RL environment work?

An agent gets a task, such as "reconcile this invoice" or "reply to this customer," inside a copy of the software it would use at work. It takes actions, like clicking, searching or running code. A grader then scores the attempt, and the model learns from the score.

Epoch AI's FAQ on reinforcement learning environments describes the environment as the set of actions the model can take and the context that determines their effects (Epoch). Press coverage, including Gizmodo, calls the simulated workplaces "RL gyms." Yes, really.

What do RL environments cost?

Epoch reports, from interviews with vendors, that website replicas run near $20,000 each and complex product replicas like Slack near $300,000. Tasks mostly price at $200 to $2,000 each, and $20,000 for a task is rare but possible.

Two founders told Epoch that exclusive deals cost roughly 4x to 5x as much as non-exclusive ones. All of these are vendor statements and not audited prices.

Where does company data come in?

Synthetic workplaces can look thin. A real company's tickets, threads and spreadsheets show how work moves from a request to a result.

Time quoted an expert saying Google's $10M winning bid for Spirit Airlines' archive, pending court approval, makes sense if you believe agents will generalize across the economy (Time).

Epoch's review does not say whether real company data is used in today's environments. Marketplace marketing leaves buyers unnamed. The demand story is plausible, and I haven't seen it show up in public prices yet.

What does it mean if you hold company data?

Records of real work show a chain from request to deliverable, the path an agent's practice follows. Fortune calls the record of steps an agent takes a trajectory. Our Spirit Airlines page shows one of the largest public bids in this market.

Before any record reaches an environment, you need the right to license it. Start with the rights check and the free fit check. We give no legal advice, so talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign.
