What is operational data?

The short answer

Operational data in AI deals is the records a company produces while working, like chat, email, tickets, documents and CRM entries. It shows the trail from request to approval across tools. In database terms it is live system data. Human data differs, since paid contractors make it on request.

Two meanings share the phrase. One comes from databases and the other from the AI data market.

What does operational data mean in a database?

An operational database is the one an operational system uses for an organization's regular work. It updates data in real time. That is why such databases are also called OLTP systems, short for online transaction processing.

In data warehouse terms, the operational database is the source for the warehouse. Analysts study combined history there (Wikipedia).

What does micro1 mean by operational data?

They mean the trail left by work. micro1's CFO gave a marketing budget request as the example in an undated recorded forum talk. The value is the path from request to analysis to approval across tools, and the names and vendor line items matter less (self-reported).

micro1's referral page lists high-quality operational data as SOPs, documentation and CRM metadata. It prefers mostly English.

The Spirit Airlines archive is the largest public example. It has about 100 million emails and 500 million Teams messages, per Time. See the Spirit Airlines page.

Is operational data the same as human data?

No, they are different products. Human data is made on request by people who are paid to write, grade or demonstrate. Operational data already exists in a company's tools.

Our page on human data covers the first, and RL environments shows where labs use the second.

What does a company need to know before licensing it?

Know these three things:

  • Who owns each record.
  • Which contracts cover it.
  • Whose messages sit inside it.

Our rights check lists the questions. The business page explains how the fit check works. The data readiness checklist covers what to prepare.

micro1's page says personally identifiable information is removed when relevant, and its CFO said in an undated recorded forum talk that it does not want personal information.

Whether removal holds is a separate question. Talk to a privacy or commercial lawyer in your state before you sign.
