What is a forward deployed engineer?

The short answer
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works directly with a customer to understand problems and build solutions using that customer's data. Palantir says the role owns end-to-end execution. At micro1, the FDE team helps run the transfer, which its CFO put at about 10 IT hours in an undated talk.
The title shows up in enterprise software hiring, and now in AI data licensing. The common thread is an engineer who sits close to the customer.
What does Palantir say an FDE does?
Palantir's posting for the role says the work is done in small teams with minimal supervision, owning end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects.
A day might span discussing architecture, wrangling massive-scale data, coding a custom web app, speaking with customer executives or setting team strategy.
That is one employer's wording. micro1 also hires for the title. An Arc job listing for a micro1 forward deployed engineer says the work is with AI labs and enterprise partners, building systems that collect, organize and improve training data.
The listing says nothing about running a company's data transfer. Other companies use the title for different jobs, and I compared only these two.
What does an FDE do in a micro1 partnership?
In a micro1 partnership, forward-deployed engineers walk the company's IT team through the data transfer, said David Revland, who works on human data at micro1, in an undated recorded forum talk.
That step comes after the data manifest form, the payment proposal and the contract. Then micro1 verifies the delivered data and pays (self-reported, recording undated).
The company's side is small. The number from micro1's CFO is about 10 hours of one or two IT people across a week or two. Our page on how long a transfer takes breaks that down, and the data manifest form comes first.
What should a company ask about it?
Ask which accounts or files the engineer needs, who at micro1 holds those credentials and when access ends. I found no published statement from micro1 on what access its engineers need.
Our risk map lists the security questions, and our readiness service prepares the file before any outside engineer arrives.
