What is a data asset?

The short answer
A data asset has two meanings. In accounting, IAS 38 defines it as an identifiable non-monetary asset without physical substance, but internally generated customer lists aren't recognized. In AI data licensing, it means records you can license. Rights matter: who wrote each record and whose contracts cover it.
Two jobs share these two words. Check which one a page means before you compare any figure.
What does data asset mean in accounting?
Under IAS 38, the international standard for intangible assets, an item has to be identifiable. It counts as identifiable when it is separable or arises from contractual or other legal rights.
Recognition also needs two conditions. Future economic benefits must be probable, and the cost must be reliably measurable (IFRS Foundation).
Does a data asset you built appear on the balance sheet?
Often it doesn't. Paragraph 63 of IAS 38 says internally generated brands, mastheads, publishing titles, customer lists and similar items are not recognized as intangible assets.
The standard's reason is that spending on those items can't be told apart from the cost of developing the business as a whole. That is the IFRS rule, so ask your accountant how your own books treat data.
What do AI data buyers and marketplaces mean by a data asset?
They mean records a buyer might license or acquire. SimpleClosure's Asset Hub launched in Apr 2026 with source code live and workspace data (email, Slack, Notion, Google Drive) in beta, per its release. See SimpleClosure Asset Hub.
Buyer sites use the word loosely, for whatever records you hold that someone might pay for. Our entry on operational data covers a neighboring term.
What does an owner need before data counts as an asset in a deal?
Rights. Who wrote each record, which contracts cover it and whose messages sit inside it all decide whether you can license it. The rights check lists those questions.
An asset sale also moves ownership, which a license does not. License versus sale compares the two, and selling data in an acquisition covers the deal setting.
