License Microsoft Teams data to AI: exports and limits
The short answer
You export Microsoft Teams chats and channel messages through export APIs. The largest example is Spirit Airlines, which held 500 million Teams messages. Google's $10M winning bid for Spirit Airlines' archive is pending court approval. Microsoft's API terms bar reselling.
Teams is the second workplace tool in the biggest public data deal so far. Companies on Microsoft 365 hold their chat there.
Has anyone bought Teams data?
The Spirit Airlines archive covers about 100 million emails and 500 million Teams messages (The Next Web).
Google won the auction at $10 million, and the court's privacy ombudsman said on 5 Oct 2026 that approval would be appropriate from a privacy perspective.

Bloomberg reported that SpaceX held informal talks about buying customer and operational records from troubled or defunct startups.
What can a Teams export return?
For a Teams export, Microsoft's documentation lists one-to-one chats, group chats, meeting chats and channel messages, including shared channel messages. Deleted messages stay reachable for 21 days, and deleted teams for 30 days.
Meeting transcripts and recordings come back for private scheduled meetings, with the organizer as the lookup key. Microsoft's averages are about 300 KB per transcript and about 350 MB per recording for a 30 to 60 minute meeting.
What does an admin need?
An app calls the export APIs with admin-approved application permissions, such as Chat.Read.All and ChannelMessage.Read.All. The users whose data is exported need an active Teams license.
What do Microsoft's API terms say?
The Microsoft APIs terms of use bar an app from building databases or creating copies of API data beyond what its intended use needs. They also bar redistributing or reselling that data. I found no sentence about AI training in that text.
An app a buyer connects through Graph is the kind of app those terms describe. That's my reading. Shared channels bring in other organizations' messages, so rights come first and the risk map lists the contract limits.
